Graphic Design Intern - College of Architecture and Design

About the Office: 

The College of Architecture and Design's administrative team focuses on supporting all administrative functions of the college's operations. The office is currently located off campus on Sutherland, with this position being hybrid.

About the VOLinternship Program: 

The VOLintern Program is UTK's on-campus internship program. Each internship will run for the duration of one academic semester. About the Internship:

The graphic design intern will support the multimedia communications specialist in developing visual assets across digital and print platforms for the College of Architecture and Design.

Internship Responsibilities: 

Design & Production

  • Assist in creating graphics and layouts for digital platforms, including social media, email campaigns, presentations, and web assets.
  • Help design print materials such as flyers, posters, signage, brochures, packaging, and event collateral.
  • Support the team in updating and adapting existing designs to meet new specifications or formats.
  • Create visual concepts that align with brand guidelines and campaign messaging.

Brand & Content Support

  • Ensure consistency in style, fonts, brand elements, and tone across all visual materials.
  • Prepare and organize design files, templates, and creative assets for internal use.
  • Assist in brainstorming and concept development for creative projects and marketing initiatives.
  • Contribute to visual storytelling through illustrations, icons, layouts, motion graphics, or simple animations (if skills allow).

Collaboration & Workflow

  • Work closely with designers, marketing specialists, and content creators to execute project needs.
  • Participate in team meetings, critiques, and feedback sessions.
  • Take direction and revise work based on stakeholder input.
  • Administrative & Project Support
  • Help manage asset libraries, image sourcing, and file naming conventions.
  • Assist in preparing final files for print or digital publishing (exporting, formatting, pre-press checks).
  • Track project progress and meet established deadlines."

Qualifications: 

  • Currently pursuing a degree in graphic design, visual communications, digital media, or related field.
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Cloud applications (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign; bonus: XD, Premiere, After Effects).
  • Familiarity with design tools such as Canva, Figma, or Sketch (optional depending on org).
  • Strong visual, typographic, and layout instincts.
  • Ability to take feedback constructively and revise work accordingly.
  • Strong organization and time-management skills.
  • Basic knowledge of file formats, color spaces (RGB/CMYK), and design for print vs. digital.
