Graphic Designer Intern - Tennessee Reading Research Center
About the Office:
On-Campus at the Tennessee Reading Research Center house in the UT Conference Center: Housed at the University of Tennessee Knoxville, it is the only reading research center in the country to connect multiple campuses within a university system. Faculty working with the center hail from the main campus in Knoxville as well as the Health Science Center, the University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture, and the undergraduate campuses of Chattanooga, Martin, and Southern. Collectively, faculty and staff bring expertise in reading development, writing development, early literacy, adolescent literacy, literacy for diverse learners, effective instruction, valid and reliable assessment, speech and language, educational technology for literacy, preparation of literacy educators, and literacy research methodology.
About the VOLinternship Program:
The VOLintern Program is UTK's on-campus internship program. Each internship will run for the duration of one academic semester. About the Internship:
The Tennessee Reading Research Center is seeking a student graphic designer intern to support a range of design projects. This paid position requires about 10 hours per week. Responsibilities include creating and editing videos, infographics, and other digital content for educational and social media use, as well as contributing to web, branding, and animation design within TRRC’s visual identity. The role offers opportunities for creative input and professional growth in a collaborative environment dedicated to advancing literacy in Tennessee. Applicants must be current University of Tennessee students with attention to detail, a strong work ethic, and experience or interest in design software such as Adobe Suite and Canva.
Internship Responsibilities:
Depending on interests and skillsets, graphic designer may contribute to the following areas structured and specific design creation including:
- Creating and editing video content for educational training and social media
- Creating and editing infographics for social media, center resources, and research reports
- Content creation for social media, newsletters, literacy curriculum, and resources
- Adherence to TRRC branding within the constraints of design
- Designing, animating, and editing educational cartoons using InDesign and Illustrator
- Opportunity for creative input and output on design projects, including web UX/UI
- Create digital products that will be useful for K-12 educators, educational policy makers, literacy researchers, and families working on literacy with their students.
- Work within visual communications and graphic design areas of composition, layout and storyboarding, animation, web design, branding, and social media design
- Obtain input from mentors to ensure that designs represent the TRRC, meet center expectations, and express ideas accurately
- Examine existing processes, identify flaws, and create solutions that improve design capabilities
- Update and maintain internal databases for video, designs, and photography
- Meet weekly goals for content development
- Arrive to work on time, ready to work, and dressed appropriately (business casual)
- Conduct themselves professionally within the work environment
Qualifications
- Attention to detail and design processes
- Experience creating graphical or media representations of information
- Ability to accept feedback and adapt accordingly
- Adherence to UTK and TRRC brand guidelines
- A strong work ethic
- Ability to learn new design software as needed
- Ability to work independently or as part of a team
- Must be currently enrolled as a student at the University of Tennessee
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience developing design, photography, video, and multimedia content; Experience with Canva and Adobe Suite: Premiere Pro, Photoshop, Lightroom and/or Adobe Captivate
