The Daily Beacon is seeking a Copy Chief to join our editorial team and lead the copy section to edit the paper, use fact-checking skills and correct articles in AP style. The ideal candidate should have a strong understanding of journalistic writing and AP style and should be experienced in leadership, communication and organization.
The Copy Chief receives a monthly stipend of $255 and gains the experience of leading fellow students in editing professional journalistic content, working with fellow editors in a newsroom environment and forming valuable connections.
- In this position, the expectation is that you will:
Recruit, schedule and oversee copy editors - Attend 3-4 editorial meetings per week, depending on the instructions given by the
Editor-in-Chief - Attend one monthly All Staff Meeting
- Schedule and lead biweekly section meetings
- Communicate with other editors
- Review articles after they are published to make sure all errors were corrected
- Set clear expectations for copy editors when it comes to following AP style, using the
fact-checking guide and communicating with section editors when necessary - Make yourself available to copy editors when they have questions
- Review the paper for errors before it is published
- Update online articles after paper copy edits are made
- Write articles for special issues
- Help to promote the Beacon through scheduled campus outreach events and engaging
with content on social media
