Staff Reporter

The River Reporter seeks an exceptional reporter to join its team. We are an award-winning print weekly with a strong digital presence, and have served the Upper Delaware River Valley since 1975, covering Sullivan County, NY, Wayne County, PA, and parts of the surrounding area.

We offer news and cultural coverage that aims to keep our local communities connected and to inspire an active, well-informed citizen body throughout the Upper Delaware. We're looking for a reporter who's interested in following the work of local government entities and community groups with awareness of the power of the press to encourage responsible governance and civic engagement.

The perfect applicant needs great writing skills, photography capabilities, some basic experience working with online website and content management systems and a passion for community journalism. A sense of curiosity, great people skills and a willingness to learn are all positives.

Reliable transportation is a must, and an applicant must either live within our coverage area or be willing to relocate. While we are ideally looking for a full-time member of the team, we would be open to talking with the perfect part-time candidate and seeing where our needs could match up.

Responsibilities

  • Research and write an average of 3-5 articles per week, using a mix of beat reporting (attending municipal meetings and keeping up with updates and announcements) and enterprise reporting (in-depth coverage of specific topics). Articles average between 3000 and 6000 characters, or roughly 500 to 1000 words.
  • Use basic photography and graphic design skills to enhance written storytelling.
  • Assist with production responsibilities as required, including by editing and uploading submitted press releases.
  • Participate in publicizing the paper's work through alternative channels, including by posting on the paper's social media accounts, appearing at community events and collaborating with other local media partners, including local public radio station Radio Catskill.
  • Manage content using various content management systems, including Google Drive and Adobe suite software such as InCopy, InDesign and Bridge. Training in specific systems will be provided, but some level of general technological competency is required.
  • Collaborate with the editorial team in conversations about the direction and impact of the paper's reporting.
