JOB SUMMARY:

Alabama Power Company Environmental Affairs currently has an opening for a Summer Intern. The primary job will be in the Environmental Laboratory, but the successful candidate will have developmental opportunities to learn about all departments within Environmental Affairs, including Chemistry, Fuels & Materials, QA/QC, Water Field Services, Air Field Services, Compliance Studies, Electronic & Data Services, Air Compliance, Water Compliance, and Land Compliance. The Laboratory provides analytical services for facilities owned or operated by Southern Company and its subsidiaries, as well as external clients. The successful candidate will perform and support environmental, compliance and operational analytical testing requirements for customers.

 

Primary Job Responsibilities:

 

· Work safely, identify and implement corrective actions for unsafe working conditions.

· Conduct diverse chemical analyses using a variety of laboratory instrumentations and analytical methodologies.

· Strong oral and written communication skills.

· Establish and evaluate analytical data and process quality control.

· Prioritize and manage daily workloads.

· Maintain analytical instrument performances and monitor supply inventories for assigned methodologies.

· Consistently maintain attention to detail while performing all job duties.

· Maintain excellent lines of communication with management, co-workers, and customers.

· Understand and adhere to all corporate policies.

 

 

Job Requirements:

 

Education & Experience

· Pursuing a degree in the field of science (chemistry, biology, environmental science, or engineering) with an introductory knowledge of chemistry.

· Experience utilizing analytical reference methods and instrumentation to perform analyses.

· Experience with quality control requirements for analytical methods.

· Wet chemistry experience preferred (pH, ammonia, alkalinity, turbidity, etc.)

 

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

· Excellent Communication and Interpersonal Skills with the ability to interface with a variety of internal/external work groups and plant personnel.

· Ability to utilize technical procedures to perform analyses.

· Ability to interface with a variety of internal/external work groups and customers.

· Demonstrated attention to detail is required.

· Ability to understand technical procedures to evaluate sample data.

· Analytical problem-solving skills with the ability to troubleshoot and resolve instrumentation issues.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

· Prepare and analyze inorganic and organic samples using a variety of laboratory instrumentation and analytical methodology. (EPA and ASTM)

· Interpret results according to operating procedures and applicable standards (EPA and ASTM methodology).
