Communication and Administration Intern - Africana Studies

 About the VOLinternship Program: 

The VOLintern Program is UTK's on-campus internship program. Each internship will run the duration of one academic semester. Students will be able to gain real work experience without leaving campus! Students who apply must commit to working between 100 and 160 hours total over the course of the semester. Students who leave a VOLintern program prior to completing the experience will be ineligible for future VOLintern roles. About the Internship:

The Department of Africana Studies (AFST) looks to hire a Student Intern to assist the department with streamlining operational measures and increasing the department's social media presence. The AFST Student Intern provides support for departmental communication, outreach, and day-to-day administrative functions. This position will manage AFST social media platforms and assist the Administrative Associate with routine office operations and events, helping promote a welcoming, organized, and student-focused departmental environment.                                  

Internship Responsibilities: 

Social Media & Communications (Approx. 50%)

  • Manage AFST department social media accounts (Instagram, Facebook, X/Twitter, etc.).
  • Create, schedule, and publish posts highlighting AFST events, programs, faculty achievements, and student opportunities.
    • Assist with content creation.
    • Monitor engagement and respond to messages or comments as appropriate.
  • Collaborate with department leadership and staff to support departmental communication goals.
  • Draft, proofread, and edit departmental communications, including emails, newsletters, and announcements.

Administrative Support (Approx. 50%)

  • Provide general office support to the Administrative Associate, such as:
    • General administrative tasks, including digital filing, data entry, and calendaring.
    • Assist with the management and organization of the departmental SharePoint.
    •  Updating departmental bulletin boards and posting flyers around campus.
    • Preparing materials for meetings or events.
  • Support the planning and execution of departmental events, workshops, and meetings.
  • Assist with event logistics, including room reservations, setup, and promotion.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements: 

  • Must be an enrolled undergraduate student with good academic standing at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville
  • Proactive in taking the initiative and presents in a professional manner.
  • Be able to work in person (this position is full remote.)
  • Experience with social media platforms (Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat, etc.).
  • Strong communication skills—written and verbal.
  • Ability to work independently, reliably, and with attention to detail.
