Come join a great team at State Hospital West (SHW)! We are seeking a Therapeutic Recreation Specialist for SHW located in Nampa. SHW is a 16-bed Adolescent Psychiatric Treatment Hospital (for adolescents between 11 and 18 years old) nestled between Ridgecrest and Centennial golf courses on a picturesque piece of state property along the Nampa Interstate 84 corridor. SHW provides psychiatric inpatient treatment care for Idaho’s adolescent citizens with the most serious and persistent mental illnesses. The hospital works in partnership with families and communities to enable clients to return to community living and is accredited by The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health Care Organizations and certified by the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

This position also requires applicants to become certified in CPR and Nonviolent Crisis Intervention. Employees will be required to work weekends, holidays, and day shifts.
The Idaho Department of Health & Welfare is a drug-free workplace. EXAMPLE OF DUTIES:
Evaluation/Diagnosis/Treatment
- Assess clients' recreation and activity skills and consults with other professionals regarding clients' physical disabilities.
- Obtain medical/social/educational histories through interviews or review of case records and analyze and interpret assessment results.
- Participate as a member of a multidisciplinary team to evaluate, diagnose, and plan developmental or rehabilitative treatment for clients.
- Determine long and short-term recreational treatment goals to meet clients' needs, facility therapeutic recreation procedures and then conducts individual and group programs to meet established goals.
- Document treatment and prepares reports, coordinate treatment with other providers and evaluate clients' needs for further treatment.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
You must possess all the minimum qualifications below to pass the exam for this position. It is highly recommended to attach a one-page cover letter to your application to demonstrate how you meet the requirements below.
- Certification through the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation. This will include having good knowledge of the following: therapeutic recreation theory, practices and methods, recreation activities and equipment and their suitability for handicapped/special needs clients, purpose and administration of assessment instruments, human growth and development patterns.
- Bachelor's degree or higher in therapeutic recreation or a major in recreation or leisure with an option in therapeutic recreation.
- Experience developing recreational therapy treatment goals for clients. Typically gained by at least six months experience developing therapeutic recreation treatment goals for activities related to client skills and needs.
- Experience planning and conducting individual and group therapy sessions. Typically gained through at least six months experience plus completion of coursework such as group dynamics, recreational activities, or experiential education; leisure education is also acceptable.
