The typical seasonal entry-on-duty period for Olympic National Park is April-May, but can be variable during these months due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding. Anticipated Entry on Duty: April 2025.

Duties
Backcountry Rangers patrol and maintain trails, check for compliance with park backcountry camping and hiking regulations, give park natural and cultural historical information, participate in search and rescue trainings and operations, keep backcountry use logs, perform campsite maintenance (including cleaning privies and disposing of human waste) and work with other divisions (trail crew, fire crew, natural resources crew). Work involves hiking rugged, steep terrain often in inclement weather. You work alone, with paid or volunteer staff, out of backcountry tent stations with primitive camping amenities for up to fifteen-day tours. At the GS-05 level, you:
- conduct wilderness patrols, monitor impacts to park resources,
- inform visitors of wilderness camping regulations,
- maintain trail infrastructure and camping facilities,
- complete wilderness and use documentation, and
- respond to emergency incidents in the field.
