Support salmon, steelhead, and trout conservation efforts while providing sustainable recreational, tribal, and commercial opportunities in the state of Washington.

Join the Dungeness Hatchery team and perform scientific, technical, and related maintenance duties in rearing Chinook and Coho salmon.

These roles offer the opportunity to assist with the culture and release of Dungeness Spring Chinook, including operating a remote acclimation site. 
 

What to Expect-
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Fish Hatchery Specialist 2 will,

Fish Culture:

  • Feed fish their calculated daily ration.
  • Monitor fish behavior and health.
  • Monitor egg development and production, including egg picking, inventory, and transport.
  • Clean ponds, raceways, troughs, and incubator systems to maintain fish health.
  • Care for fish at remote acclimation sites.
  • Assist in broodstock collection using traps and nets.

 

Recordkeeping and Reporting:

  • Accurately record routine hatchery activities, including feed sheets and loss records.
  • Ensure timely submission of complete and accurate forms.

 

Operation and Maintenance of Facility:

  • Respond to alarms and take appropriate actions.

 

Operation and Maintenance of Equipment:

  • Drive and operate a planting truck to and from planting sites.
  • Organize and maintain hatchery tools, equipment, and grounds.

 

Public Contact and Communications:

  • Answer questions from facility visitors.
  • Interact with the public professionally and courteously.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Work Setting, including hazards:

  • Primarily outdoor work in all weather conditions, including rain, snow, extreme heat, cold, darkness, and direct sunlight.
  • Use of respirators and other personal protective equipment (PPE) when handling facility chemicals.
  • Perform strenuous physical activities, including frequent walking, climbing, lifting, and daily carrying or moving 50lbs of fish feed bags.
  • Work may include river and brush navigation, gill netting, seining, and gaffing in challenging terrain.
  • Tasks may involve working in or near water, including tasks that require navigating, negotiating, and performing duties related to water environments.

Schedule:
Typically, 7:00 am to 3:30 pm on a 10-days-on, 4-days-off rotation. Work hours may vary based on workload and weather conditions. Occasional travel and over 40 hours per week may be required to meet seasonal workload demands across the complex. 

*Standby: 
Standby duties are currently assigned. Standby entails the employee being responsible for overseeing the facility for the remaining 16 hours of the day after the regular 8-hour shift. While on standby this position will work ten (10) days on and be off four (4) days. All applicants applying for this position should understand that standby is a requirement for all positions in the Fish Hatchery Specialist series.  

Management may determine it is necessary to assign standby in order to accomplish the goals and objectives of the agency and as necessary to protect the resources of the agency and if assigned, it will be a requirement of the position.

Housing: 
Housing is not provided for this position.

Tools and Equipment:
Table saw, miter saw, skill saw, chainsaw, reciprocating saw, drills, weed eater, lawn mowers, leaf blower, hand powered sprayers, gas and electric pumps, welders, hammer, screwdrivers, wrenches, hand saws, pruners, shovels, and rakes.

Customer Interactions:
Provide public contacts, tours and communications as needed.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required Qualifications: 

One (1) year of experience as a Fish Hatchery Specialist 1 AND successful completion of agency supervised training program.

OR

Associate’s degree in fisheries technology, biology or closely allied field AND one (1) year of experience performing fish culture duties in a hatchery.

OR

Two (2) years of education towards a Bachelor’s degree in fisheries, biology or closely allied field AND one (1) year of experience performing fish culture duties in a hatchery.

OR

Successful completion of a fish culture program from a vocational school AND one (1) year of experience performing fish culture duties in a hatchery.


Please Note:
Three (3) years of experience performing a variety of fish culture duties in a hatchery may substitute for the required education.

 

Certifications/Licenses:
Valid driver’s license.
 

Preferred Qualifications:
In addition to the required qualifications, our ideal applicant will possess some or all the following:

Experience with salmon broodstock collection.
