July - September 2019 • Seattle, WA

What I liked

I liked my mentor a lot. He helped me through the learning process and made my experience worthwhile.

What I wish was different

I wish that the environment was a little more social, I had a hard time meeting any other interns in my time at Amazon.

Advice

Things are super team dependent, but definitely try to meet people and just get to know things around your team and Amazon in general.

Software Development Engineering Intern

May - August 2019 • Seattle, WA

What I liked

I really liked the exposure I received to such a huge company like Amazon. It was really impressive to me how there were so many employees yet every software engineer worked in teams of 5-10 people. Overall, the exposure and knowledge I gained from the experience was priceless.

What I wish was different

I wish that I had been given more support from my team prior to beginning the internship. The on-boarding experience was long and there was so much to digest in so little time. I wish I could have come more prepared, having maybe reviewed the project or been aware of what sorts of tasks I would be asked to do. That would have really put my time there to better use.

Advice

I would say that there are a lot of people out there who do not like these big tech companies, but at the end of the day, working at one (even just for a summer) is the best way to know if you like it or not. It's a glimpse into a completely different world, especially at companies like Amazon, Google, Facebook, Microsoft, etc. It is 100% worth the work, experience, connections, and knowledge gained, and it comes with a very competitive salary. Although I did not get a return offer, a majority of interns are asked to return full-time!

What I liked

I loved the experience of working at a large corporate office, the work environment is very vibrant and rookie-friendly, also the people that work at Amazon are nice too. I'm really impressed and like the principles that Amazon follows to deliver unmatched customer satisfaction. The functionality, communication and teamwork here are outstanding and superb, a lot of things are performance based which I like a lot and motivates me to work harder. I absolutely love their leniency in dress code, where you can come to work wearing casual clothes (work appropriate) and feel just as comfortable as at home. The employee engagement at Amazon is very versatile and fun, on weekdays, they'd bring in food trucks around lunch time, how awesome is that?! Last, but not least, the 10% off selected Prime products.......

What I wish was different

I wish I had prepared myself better in school and done a better job at networking, I was a bit timid when I started working at Amazon. Also, I wish I could have learned more about the entire Amazon operations on the job.

Advice

Most importantly, abide to the corporate policy and not run into any HR issues. Network and build a good relationship with your supervisors and co-workers on both a professional and personal level. Just meet as many people as you can, because you never know when that reference is going to come in handy one day; people at Amazon are really cool anyway, despite of career-related purposes.

What I liked

I like the location and the people who were on my team.

What I wish was different

There were some areas of my work that were extremely confusing at times. There were places where a bit more structure and guidance would have been helpful. Also my mentor was not always the best advocate for me.

Advice

Make sure to thoroughly document your progress and when presenting be sure to set expectations about what you are sharing and be clear and concise when explaining your work.

Software Developer Engineer Intern

May - August 2019 • Seattle, WA

What I liked

- Everyone was super friendly - You get an opportunity to work with the best engineers in the field - Pay, including benefits such as the housing stipend and transportation reimbursement, is very good for an internship - Seattle is an amazing city! - The work was interesting and challenging - Lots of free food :) (though this is not typical from Amazon teams) - Team outings every so often, like laser tag or whitewater rafting - Amazon is the biggest company in Seattle, so you definitely feel like you're a part of the city. There are Amazon buildings everywhere. - Leadership principles are great and really help to make good decisions for the customers and company as a whole, even when it is difficult - Dogs in the office! - Extremely flexible schedule

What I wish was different

- Some teammates are less capable than you would expect at such a large company - Amazon's "be frugal" principle is taken to the extreme in unnecessary areas. In-building lunches are expensive, and the coffee is subpar. Not a huge deal, just a minor annoyance (especially in comparison to other big tech companies)

Higher pay depending on the position you are place in

Software Engineering Intern

June - September 2019 • Seattle, WA

What I liked

Amazon has some really excellent software engineers and it was a privilege to work with them, I learned a lot. The company has a reputation as a sweat shop but it's not well deserved in my opinion; I didn't work too much and my team didn't either.

What I wish was different

There weren't too many intern events or opportunities to meet other interns.

Advice

Amazon has a lot of internal tools that are difficult to learn. Try to get familiar with using them as fast as possible, I wasted a lot of time working through issues related to poor knowledge of those tools. Also go to the tech talks, they're usually pretty interesting.
